I Was with Custer the Old Man Said
(reproduction from the collection of Tom Booth)

This sensational "Still Life Historical," as Mr. Otis chose to call it, was a milestone in his career. It created little short of a tempest, when it was unveiled, among the myriad Little Big Horn fanatics with whom the American West is crawling. Almost as one man they leaped to attack and defame the artist because he casually referred to the battle as Custer's Last Mistake.

from Mr. Otis (Macmillan, 1958)
