Introduction

Whether Meyer points to a "renaissance in photography" or an entirely new art form, which is in some ways a synthesis of the means and methods of both painting and photography, remains to be decided. My own feeling is that we are at very least seeing the birth of a new breed of artist -- the computerist. And, if in fact we are seeing an entirely new breed of art, it is apt to have as many names as the number of persons engaged in its production. Arguments already abound about the meaning of all this activity, and I doubt that much is going to be settled in the near term. For now, though, it is probably best to merely look, and then to come to one's own judgments in the matter. There is much to look at, and some of it is quite compelling.
